Opening of the Museum of Sturgeon on the Volga: A Journey Through Centuries of Volgograd's Fishing Heritage
Dear friends!
We are delighted to announce a grand event — the Museum of Sturgeon on the Volga is opening in Volgograd! This is not just an exhibition — it is an immersion in the centuries-long history of one of the most majestic inhabitants of Volga waters.
Museum exhibition
Pearl of the Volga: the sturgeon — living grandeur of the river.
The sturgeon is not just a fish. It is a symbol of the Volga, its living chronicler, a witness to eras and change. Since ancient times the Volga banks were famed for rich sturgeon fisheries. Volga fishermen passed down the secrets of the catch from generation to generation, carefully preserving traditions.
In the 17th–18th centuries sturgeon became a true delicacy, available not only at royal courts but to prosperous townspeople. The Volga, like a living artery, generously shared its riches: sturgeon weighing dozens of kilograms were the prize of skilled fishermen.
By the 19th century the Volga sturgeon fishery reached unprecedented scale. Fishing artels grew along the riverbanks, and sturgeon entered the menus of Europe's finest restaurants. The Volga rightfully was called the "sturgeon river," its waters a treasury of prized fish.
The 20th century: from abundance to alarm
However, already in the first half of the 20th century the situation began to change. Intensive fishing, construction of hydroelectric plants, and river pollution led to a sharp decline in sturgeon numbers. By the 1980s the species was on the brink of extinction.
In Volgograd, as across the country, measures were taken to protect sturgeon:
- strict catch quotas were introduced;
- fish hatcheries were established;
- protected areas were organized.
Today the sturgeon is a protected species, and its preservation is a task for all of society.
Museum of Sturgeon: where history comes alive
Our museum is not just a collection of exhibits. It is a space of memory and education where everyone will find something of interest: authentic documents, photographs, and fishermen's everyday objects telling the story of Volga fishing traditions.
Ecology corner: information on modern methods of population recovery and the role of each person in preserving nature.
Why does this matter?
The museum opening is not only a cultural event. It is a reminder that:
- Nature is our shared home, and its riches must be protected.
- Traditions are not the past but a living thread connecting generations.
- Knowledge is the first step toward preservation.
